Smith+Nephew demonstrates new features of CORI surgical robot at AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting: Personalized surgical solutions
Smith+Nephew (LSE: SN, NYSE: SNN), a global orthopaedic medical technology company, is showcasing new capabilities for its CORI surgical robot at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' Annual Meeting (AAOS 2024) on February 12th, 2024, at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. This unique robotic-assisted surgical solution, which does not rely on image navigation, is designed to further help physicians personalize surgery, improve efficiency and optimize the performance of the Schlafly Orthopaedic Reconstruction portfolio.
CORI surgical robot
The CORI surgical robot is Smith+Nephew's next-generation handheld robotic platform. It can provide support for the entire continuum of knee replacement care (including unicompartmental knee replacement, total knee replacement, revision surgery), and Provides comprehensive solutions for total hip arthroplasty (THA) navigation. Robot-assisted surgery has been shown to improve surgical outcomes and be more cost-effective compared to traditional techniques.
The CORI Surgical System is the only robotic-assisted solution for total knee revision with RI.KNEE software that enables joint line repair and improved patient-reported outcomes (including pain and PROMIS depression). Additionally, the CORI Digital Tension Adjuster provides objective gap data and quantifies joint laxity prior to osteotomy in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), resulting in more consistent, repeatable joint balancing and alignment compared to manual tensioning.
Smith+Nephew Robotics Platform
Schlafly Smith+Nephew's robotics platform is the only one on the market that allows for personalized planning using simulation and artificial intelligence. Its RI.HIP Modeler allows physicians to perform an interference analysis (meaning an analysis of possible interference or collision phenomena after an artificial joint replacement) based on the patient's profile, while the RI.KNEE software uses AI for personalized planning and implant placement.
Smith & Nephew’s robotic-assisted surgical solutions have a positive impact on the healthcare economic landscape. For example, patients who undergo CORI surgical robot-assisted UKA surgery can be discharged from the hospital within 24 hours without complications or readmission.
Smith & Nephew first launched the CORI surgical robot in 2019. Its portable design, compact structure, short setup time, and small footprint make it easy to move from one operating room to another, making it more suitable for today's busy operating rooms. The robot combines 3D intraoperative imaging with robotic precision milling tools to better preserve ligaments during surgery. Digital robotic tools enhance surgeons' ability to measure, plan and perform knee surgeries and personalize procedures based on the patient's anatomy.
